We were going to do this in the A Hard Day's Night film, but the director Dick Lester didn't like it, so we put it on the flip side of the album. I like the middle eight of that song.

—John Lennon, The Beatles Off The Record, p.90, 2000

I wrote that for 'A Hard Day's Night,' but Dick Lester didn't even want it. He resurrected 'Can't Buy Me Love' for that sequence instead. I like the middle-eight to that song, though that's about all I can say about it.

—John Lennon, The Playboy Interviews, 1980

Next recording was 'I'll Cry Instead', for the LP. This was taped in two parts — 'Section A' and 'Section B' — for editing together at a later date. Six takes of 'A' and two of 'B' saw the song through to satisfactory completion.

—Mark Lewisohn, The Beatles Recording Sessions, p.44, 1988
